About
Dan Hocking is a Toronto-based digital expert, community builder and social media addict. In particular, Dan is passionate about the digital experience, propelling communities to actually do things, and how design thinking can be applied to a variety of problems. This is how he occupies his days, helping companies and individuals move forward in these areas. He can also be found regularly stirring up conversation on Twitter, under the moniker of D_Hock.
As a child, Dan split his time between hacking away on the computer, and hacking away on the golf course. Starting early at both of these led to skill development at both, and Dan can usually be found on the golf course when he’s not on the computer – well, during the summer months, anyway. His first startup was an online gaming review site in the 9th grade – and it flamed out gloriously, as many do. That was his start in both the entrepreneurial and development spheres, two things which he remains passionate about today.
Dan’s had many unique opportunities for someone his age, including experience in corporate governance, recruitment, project management and strategic planning. While in university, Dan also ran the marketing department for Canada’s second-largest students’ union, managing 125 paid and unpaid staff, and budgets as large as $2 million. The variety of experiences gives Dan a different viewpoint on many issues, and he is able to draw on many past experiences in making his points.
Dan has been involved in many groups and events based locally in the Toronto area, recently including GenYTo, Pay It Backwards Day, and ChangeEngine, and regularly attends events and functions in the area – so if you see him, please feel free to come say hi.
When Dan isn’t on the computer – or the golf course – he can be found following professional sports, exploring the Toronto community, or curled up with a good book.
